Becoming Animal

I'm sharing the words of writer, David Abram from his book "Becoming Animal An Earthly Cosmology" not only for your sake, but also for mine, so I will not forget them as they are a way of thinking and realizing our place in the world. Each day as I draw from life, outside surrounded by nature, birds, wild things and hot skies, and then later on when I paint abstractly, at home with ambiguity and passion's many flavours, I struggle to find a way to be in a world quite un-accepting of the artist's way. So it's writers like Abram who guide and encourage me with their ponderings.

The computerized mind when left to its own devices, all too easily overlooks the solid things of the earth. Skilled in the rapid manipulation of symbols, it neglects the stones and the grasses that symbolize nothing other than themselves. Dazzled by its own virtual creations, the digital self forgets its dependence upon a world that it did not create, overlooking its carnal emplacement in the very world that created it.

Bodily perception provides our most intimate entry into a primary order of reality that can be disparaged or dismissed only at our peril.

An addled and anesthetized numbness is spreading rapidly throughout our species.

There are those, however, who are not frightened of grief; dropping deep into the sorrow, they find therein a necessary elixir to the numbness. When they encounter one another, when they press their foreheads against the bark of a centuries-old tree, or their palms into the hand of yet another child who has tasted prematurely of wrenching loss, their eyes well with tears that fall easily to the ground. The soil needs this water. Grief is but a gate, and our tears a kind of key opening a place of wonder that's been locked away. Suddenly we notice the sustaining resonance between the drumming heart within our chest and the pulse rising from under the ground.

Divine Feminine Shamanic Healing

Deliquattro Poppy Maid. Watercolor on paper, 8 x 10 inches. © 2010 by Kathy Crabbe Today I pulled a Creative Soul Guide card from my handpainted deck in order to find an affirmation to help me through the day (see image to the left) called - "Deliquattro, Poppy-Maid".

Affirmation: You are becoming divinely female. Question: How can you express that today? Stone: Lepidolite

Lepidolite (lavender and pink) helps release karmic suffering and promotes acceptance, calm, trust in life, and trust in the Goddess.

I'd like to start expressing my divine female-ness by sharing the video below, especially because it shows a daughter helping and healing her mom. So get out your kleenex my friends, you may need it ;)

ABOUT SHAMANIC JOURNEYER, Jura Scott:

Jura is a creative being who is building a life that honors her values and expresses who she is. Jura is devoted to self discovery and the sharing and exchanging of those findings with others who are doing the same. WHAT IS A SHAMANIC JOURNEY?

Shamanic journeying is an expanded state of awareness brought on by rattles and a frame drum. You will experience an awakening and enhancement of your spiritual capacities and your journey will be undertaken with a specific purpose in mind. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF JOURNEYING?

The revelations you receive can be used for problem solving, well-being and healing; for yourself, on behalf of others and in the service of the planet. A SAMPLE JOURNEY This is a shamanic journey that Jura did for Dot on June 13, 2009. (Transcribed from notes written after the journey.) Dot's Question: Where should I go next, east or west?

I began in the place where I start all of my shamanic journeys, the beautiful wooden bridge in Scotland. A mill used to stand on the shore. The bridge stretches from grassy bank to grassy bank and on the right bank stands a huge willow tree.
Standing on the wooden bridge I could hear the ice cold, water rush over moss covered rocks. As I looked out it was foggy and distant almost like a bad focused camera or not having your glasses on. I couldn’t seem to zoom in for a close up of the area and I couldn’t work things out so that I was viewing from my own eyes. Instead I was seeing myself.
From above came the seagull flapping his wings furiously over my head. He looked smaller than in previous journeys I thought. He flapped and poked and prodded and began steering me toward the large tree that sat on the right of the shore.
I could see a small hole about the size of a tooney (a Canadian two dollar coin) at the base of the tree. Soft moss covered the roots that stuck out of the ground. The grass around the tree felt like plastic astroturf or fake plastic grass on my bare feet. Now, I was inside of my body looking out of my eyes.
I looked down at the hole and then suddenly the seagull and me were sucked into it at the same time. We came into the base of the large trunk with a thud. It was dark, cold and silent. The floor was hard packed mud and cool to the touch. A kind of black, matt box came up out of the earth and enveloped us. I sat on the floor in the corner of the box and the flaps of the lid closed above us.
Then the seagull spread out his wings as if to fly, but pressed his back and wings against the lid of the box in a flying position. We began to rise, slowly, up and up and up.
I didn’t feel afraid, just curious. The box stopped rising and the seagull opened the lid flaps. I rose and looked out. We were at the top of the trees. The box was secure on a big branch, propped up by smaller branches all around.
2.
All the while I’m asking the question in my mind, “Where should I go next, east or west?” The atmosphere was misty, a bit damp, a bit foggy, but warm. It may have just rained. For miles and miles were round, fluffy green trees and green grass and small bumps of hills. It was beautiful and peaceful.
Jura: “Is this East or West? I’m not good with directions.” He shrugged his shoulders.
Seagull: “I only know North or South because that’s where I fly every year. “
Jura: “Where’s North?” He pointed up. “Where’s South?” He pointed down. Then I got a vision of Mr. Howard's classroom, my grade 7 teacher who loved to teach geography. I saw the big map he used to pull down from the canister above the chalk board and North was indeed up and South was down on Mr. Howard's map. The acronym “Never Eat Sour Watermelons” (North, East, West, South) came to mind. So I figured the seagull and I were looking to the right of North and now we were looking East.
Jura: “Should she go East?”
Seagull: “Yes, that’s where it all began for her. And that’s where she will be buried.”
Jura: “Is she going to die?”
Seagull: “Eventually everyone dies. That is where she will be buried” he said again. “This is where the trees with roots are. “
Seagull: “She wasn’t really ever yours. She’s going back to where she started.”
Jura: “What about the West, can’t I see that? Shouldn’t we take a look at the West?” He didn’t answer.
Then the box lid flaps started to close and I sat down on the floor in the corner of the box again. The seagull repeated the process of spreading his wings, but this time positioned himself on the floor of the box. We started to descend breaking and snapping the small branches and twigs that had been holding us in place. Snap, pop, crack. The sound was violent and loud.
3.
We got to the base of the tree and we climbed out of the box. I felt a bit annoyed that he hadn’t answered my question about the West. I was getting a vibe from him that he felt he had answered my question and didn’t feel the need to elaborate any further; that wasn’t part of the deal.
Then we found ourselves out of the tree and back on the bridge.
I looked down the roaring river. On one side (the East side) I could still see the greens and trees and hills. On the other side, as far down as the river travelled, there was a large canvas that stretched from the ground far, far, far, up in the sky covering anything that you might see of the West. Painted on this canvas were abstract shapes in very flat colours; light terracotta, tan, and creams.
I wasn’t happy about this. I didn’t like the idea that my client asked me to do something for her and I was going to end up coming back with half of the information. I needed to tell her what’s good and bad about the East and what was good and bad about the West. He looked at me and rolled his eyes.
The seagull flew above the bridge about 20 feet in the air and started to poke a hole and tear the canvas. Suddenly I was up there peering through the hole. I looked through and down first and I saw the edge of a cliff way, way, way, down. I thought of my friend's sister who drove her car off of a cliff in B.C. When I peered directly ahead through the hole, I saw rows and rows of mountains, the Rockies. I was over top of them as if in a plane flying closely -- then the seagull suddenly burst through the hole and began to fly way from me, over the top of the mountains. He said looking back at me, "They’re very pointy, and very sharp, you can really hurt yourself."

Jura's Interpretation: When Dot came to me for a Shamanic Journey she had just turned 75 years old and her health wasn’t great. She knew that it was time to sell her home and make other arrangements for her final years.

Dot was making a difficult decision… whether to go out west to British Columbia, Canada and live with her daughter or return to her hometown on the opposite coast (East) of Canada and live with her sister. So her question was carefully formulated as “Where should I go next, East or West?”

When I entered into the trunk of the tree I found myself wrapped in a black box not unlike a “black box” or a flight data recorder (FDR) which logs information such as speed and altitude on an airplane as well as carrying beacons to help find the aircraft in a rescue. . The black box could also have been a cockpit voice recorder (CVR) which logs all voice communication in the cockpit.

I felt Dot was in need of a bit of a rescue. She needed to make a move before her ill health progressed. She could not decide what to do. So I proceeded with the journey sitting in the black box. My guide, the seagull traveled with me as usual.

A SAMPLE JOURNEY
This is a shamanic journey that Jura did for herself - Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008
(Transcribed from notes written after the journey.)

Jura's Question:
What is the immediate step I need to take to begin the path to living my life as a successful painter?

I envisioned myself in my sacred spot; an ancient bridge in Scotland in the county of Angushire. It was night time. I wanted to get to the willow tree on the right hand hand bank of the water. (In shamanic journeys it is important to have a way to travel down to the under world or up to the upper world. I use the tree as my vehicle). I wanted to go to the tree but somehow couldn’t move - I was having a difficult time focusing. I looked down and tried to see the river rushing below. It was so dark, I could only hear the sounds of the water rushing over the moss covered rocks. (There is so much resting on this question and on getting an answer!) I laid the side of my cheek on the wooden bridge railing. I stretched my arms way out to the side. I tried to focus. Just then I decided to get up and walk on the railing of the bridge as if it was a balance beam. My arms open wide and I am balancing as I walk. As I looked to the east, the bridge and railing bent down to meet the river bank a few yards from my willow. I walked down the railing and met the ground. I headed towards the tree on my hands and knees. I stood up and stared. My tree was no longer a willow but a large oak. Just then I began to walk right up to the trunk of the tree. I was heading to the upper world. I was hanging on tightly to the leaves and branches, climbing, all the while my body parallel to the ground. I reached the top and the blue of the day sky peeks through the branches. I felt a zing of pride and accomplishment go through my body. I had always been afraid to climb trees when I was a kid. I thought of my power animal -- the seagull. Just then he appeared and landed on my forehead. I wondered, “Is he going to shit on my head like the last time he visited?” I looked into the sky, it was cloudy and overcast now. There were Red Barron airplanes flying in formation overhead. They looked like WW11 fighter planes.

Jura: “Why are we looking at these airplanes? What are we doing?”
Seagull: “You don’t have to fight you know.”
Jura: “Can you tell me, what is the immediate step I need to take, to begin the path to living my life as a successful painter?”
Seagull: “It’s going to be easy this time. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Go with it. You’re finally letting your work speak for itself.”
Jura: “But I heard that it’s important for an artist to be able to explain and talk about their work in order for it to sell.”
Seagull: “Not this work. People have been waiting for it. They are waiting,” he emphasized. The show in February for the Medical Association, you should be in that show. People at the show can speak about your work for you.”
Jura:“How?”
Seagull: “You need to hear THEIR voices, the sufferers. Find a way to allow people to record their words. Let them explain what they see in your work, how they connect to it. Maybe you could utilize one of the faces from your paintings. People who come to see your work at the show can stand behind it like a mask and speak. They push a button and record their thoughts on what they see and how the work connects for them.

My finger started to draw a circle on my mat where I lay; drawing one of my faces. I saw the mask on a kind of pole or microphone stand. I felt excited about this idea.

Seagull:
“Things are going to be easy now because you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing.”

I was still there holding onto the tree branches, parallel to the ground, arms and legs spread out. Just then the seagull stood underneath me and mirrored my position. He grew to my size. His back to my back. He was large enough for me to lean back onto. He said, “Let yourself go -- feel how tense you are? Relax,” he said. Laying back on the seagull, I felt how tense my body was, I couldn’t believe it. I thought I was relaxed. As he took off flying, he said, “Let me feel your weight. I’m okay, I can handle it - no problem.” I started to sink into the mat I was lying on. It felt like I was on a motorcycle, moving as one with the seagull as we soared through the sky. When he turned, I gently turned too. When he soared upward I stayed put. There was no need to buckle me in.

Just then my cat meowed loudly in the hallway outside of the room where I was journeying. The seagull got flustered and a flapped his wings furiously. I held on tight. The journey interrupted, was complete for today.

JURA'S JOURNEY INTERPRETED:

First I want to say WOW! I love this process of journeying. This was the first time I had conversation in a journey. It was very exciting and felt very natural.

Here are my thoughts as it relates to my life today...

(My Question - What is the immediate step I need to take to begin the path to living my life as a successful painter?) When the seagull said “It’s going to be easy this time. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Go with it.” He validates my dream; that the creative work I’ve been doing of late is what I am supposed to be doing. I have been attempting to be successful at so many other things. I feel the “this time” refers to building a life around art and painting instead of all of the other things I have been attempting to do.

I felt a twinge of ecstasy at these thoughts. A kind of joy that I have only felt two other times in my life! The idea of re-purposing my life around creativity seemed absolutely right. I felt empowered by his words and energetic where I had been feeling no energy. There was something different in this journey. It was about the connection I felt with my emotions and my physical body. I had my arms open wide as I balanced myself on the bridge railing. I had my arms open wide when I was at the top of the tree, and I had my arms open wide when I flew on the back of the seagull. For someone like me who keeps their body language folded tight, it was a new and exhilarating feeling. Having my arms open wide, I was able to breath in deeply and feel incredible joy.

The seagull’s words gave me a feeling of confidence to go forward with my painting. My mind was going a 100 miles an hour. I was completely inspired by the creative ideas he put forward. Especially on how I might be able to reach out to the viewers who would understand my work. He did this with mention of an art show that I had completely forgotten about. (One of my complaints is that I learn about shows after they have already opened.) The audience would be an exact match for the thrust of my work. Viewers would connect. For me, as an artist this is key. The journey also brought to mind how tense I am and how I worry a ton. I need to go with the flow more. When the seagull allowed me a soft spot to land (on his back) letting me travel in flight with him, it reminded me that the universe has got my back and I cannot fall.

The last part of the journey was interesting. The seagull got flustered and seemed to lose focus when he heard my cat meow. The message for me is about watching out for natural predators. We can’t go into things with blinders on, but we also cannot be so cautious that we are stifled with fear. We must keep moving forward toward our dreams.
