Soul Moan & Loss

Soul Moan by Kathy Crabbe

With this painting “Soul Moan” all of a sudden I went from being one kind of artist to another.

Things deepened.

I had just read “Maïna” by Dominique Demers and had a wolf dream about my birth mom, Sally. These two things were connected. The author of “Maïna” had interviewed Sally to learn about being courageous in the wild. They were friends.

Dreams
Totems
Shamanism

On page 177 of “Maïna”
a baby was born, alone
left on the ice
to moan - soul moan.
I was that baby
and my moan is this painting,
this series,
this life.

As the tears of Goddess drip
blood and the Sun turns black,
high in the mountains,
a mother
mourns her lost daughter
and grows fangs
to protect
herself,
to become
wolf
She-Wolf
a ghost
I meet in my dreams

and I paint her
to remember
this loss.

Our loss.

The loss all mothers and all children
know
when separated from
the life blood
they depended on
for nine months
in the womb
of the Mother.

Blessed Be,
this Solstice Night
the shortest night of the year
(Originally written in 2018 in my journal)

Today I just found out that Maïna was made into a movie.
Originally I read Maïna as a book by Dominique Demers.
