My First Zine Fair at 60

I've been making handmade books, magazines, newspapers, and zines (self-published magazines) since I was a wee one, so I was absolutely thrilled to finally gather together a collection of the zines I've created this year for the Zomics Festival of Comics and Zines at Wignall Art Museum, Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, California, last week — my very first zine fair at age 60!

Ever since I was little in the 1970s, I knew that screens like TVs were 'evil'. I watched and railed against my little brother who I felt was far too enmeshed in screens. Later, I had the words to describe what this meant; screens could be addicting.

When I watched Wim Wenders 1991 movie Until the End of the World, my worst fears came to life. In it, the character's dreams were cast onto a screen, and they could not look away; lost completely in a dream world.

I created my Go Analog Af zine as a fuck you to the billionaires that steal our souls to fill their pockets through the screens of phones, computers and tv monitors. If you object to the word fuck, don't buy this zine.

How to Call Upon the Dead

This next zine was inspired by my work as a professional psychic-medium over the last 20 years. Especially when I first realized I could contact the dead during my training in an English Traditional Healing Circle. It was life-changing to know that the dead still live on as souls. The cover was inspired by a dream I had about the ancestors which I compiled into a best selling book. I also included quotes from an actual book I'm writing about our human and animal ancestors illustrated with hybrid creatures.

Second Saturn Return

Last year, during my second Saturn Return (an astrological transit we all undergo around age 60), I undertook a second maturation process, because yes, Saturn is THE Queen of maturation processes. During my first Saturn return at age 30, my entire business plan for Lulu Design, my silk art business came to me in a rebirthing session and for the next 30 years, I proudly became a full-time artist and soul reader.

If you want to delve more deeply into your own major life transits I offer readings here.

At 60, it's not about how we fit into the world by making a living it's more about the legacy we leave behind, as we enter this last phase of life. For me, art has always been my lifeline beyond words. I am passionate about color. It's my religion, so to speak. At age 40 (Uranus Opposition), I became of service through my psychic mediumship, which involved words of healing and service to others.

Now at 60, I want to make objects so I can share my words combined with my art. Zines have taken center stage. Zines are small, self-published, punk rock, radical acts of resistance and passion that fight against the systems of oppression that keep us small and disconnected from each other.  Zines are anti capitalist. They are for the people and by the people and are often traded or given away.

DIY Energy: It's Everything

My first zine fair was amazing. I felt that energy - that fight, that spirit of DIY and DIT (do it together) alive and well in those who make, by hand, their passion come alive through small handheld objects of words and art.

What I love about the process of making zines is that it's down and dirty - fast - I can draw with markers and crayons and write in cartoon bubbles and swear and cut and paste to make something that is real and tangible and handheld, not precious. Hell, it's $2 at a fair, or traded, or even free.  It gets the work out there, it's freedom, it's fun, it's survival, it's everything. It's a way to stay true to self in an AI, influencer, screen addicted, billionaire psychopath, death cult world, which is voluntarily designed to keep us enslaved and addicted.

Zine Structures

During the Zomics Fair I was surrounded by many alt-thinking folks sharing their self-published zines, pins, stickers, art and weirdness. I spent the whole day making connections and had a blast!

So far this year, I've completed nine different zine structures from my favorite zine-making book, Whatcha Mean What's a Zine?  Above, are some of the zines I brought to the fair.

Resist, Create, Dream: Zines & Magic for the Full Moon

Dear Moon Muser,

It's the Virgo Full Moon, and the Flint hagstone I'm wearing around my neck carries this message:

"I bring the inspirations of the Divine realms into practical manifestation in the physical world."
— from The Book of Stones by Robert Simmons and Naisha Ahsian

I purchased it from the Museum of Magic, Fortune Telling and Witchcraft in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was found on a nearby beach. I believe that shore lies close to where my ancestors were once accused of witchcraft — for throwing stones like this into the sea and "causing" a ship to sink.

Wretched times — reflected in the rising fascism across the globe, and here in the USA, where I live part-time.

One way to resist this evil is to:
do your magick,
create fiercely, and
stay grounded and centered as you fight the good fight and walk your talk — whatever that means for you.

For me, it means writing these Moon Letters, drawing, painting, dreaming, meditating — and, of course, making zines. Zines are a punk-rock, activist, and effective way to get your message out — even if it's just for yourself and your own healing.

What is a zine?
”Zines are cheaply made printed forms of expression on any subject. They are like mini-magazines or home-made comic books...they have been around under different names (chapbooks, pamphlets, flyers). People with independent ideas have been getting their word out since there were printing presses. It's a great feeling to hold copies of your zine in your hand. Go ahead, there is no wrong way.”
— from Whatcha Mean, What's A Zine? by Mark Todd & Esther Pearl Watson

On a Personal Note

I've been invited to a Zine and Comic Festival at the Wignall Art Museum where I'll share my zines, Spell Cat postcards and Oracle/Tarot decks.

I'm thrilled to once again be included in the New Zealand Moon Calendar put out by the Creative Cronies. I'm also sad to say that this will be their last year doing the calendar, as they are retiring and will instead focus on their web gallery. Two of my images from last year's series of Hybrid Shadow Faeries will be included.

I'll have these zines available for sale soon! And if you'd like your soul reading to include a zine created just for you, please let me know.

Sparkly Blessings!
