In the Lefty Spotlight: Virginia Breaks Through Creative Blocks

Virginia and I met through The 52 Project; a 52 week art journaling event hosted by the Riverside Art Museum. Virginia was intrigued by my non-dominant hand drawing and decided to give it a whirl and here's what happened!

Virginia: I am fairly new to the art world. I started out with a mixed media class at the Riverside Art museum and I got hooked. I started an art journal in September 2015. I found that sometimes I would create a background on a page but would be stuck beyond that. Recently I repainted a page several times because I did not like what was there and I felt blocked. Nothing creative was coming out. I finally thought about Kathy Crabbe’s lefty cards and something I had read describing how writing, scribbling or drawing with your non-dominant hand helps to get you going again when you are creatively blocked. I scribbled and wrote with my left hand on this page. It was like magic! As soon as I filled the page with my lefty scribbles I was able to create again. Thank you Kathy Crabbe!

About Virginia, Mixed Media Artist and Art Instructor

Virginia Godoy retired from her career as a Wastewater Chemist for the City of Riverside after 30 years of service. During her last year in service at the City of Riverside, she discovered a love for mixed media art after taking a class at the Riverside Art Museum.  Since that time, Ms Godoy has judged several art competitions and started a new career as an Art Instructor for the Riverside Art Museum’s Art-to-go program. Ms Godoy is currently teaching art with History and Science as well as Fine Arts to 5th and 6th graders in the Riverside Unified School District. Ms Godoy occasionally teaches youth and adult art classes at the Riverside Art Museum.

Valley News Press Release: Lefty Oracle Deck Art Exhibit at Riverside Art Museum

Kathy Crabbe will be exhibiting 52 original paintings from her Lefty Oracle Deck at the Riverside Art Museum Aug. 4 to Aug. 7. from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., during Arts Walk.

Crabbe spent this past year on an artistic journey, with 147 other people in a program through the Riverside Art Museum called “The 52 Project.” It was designed to help participants be more creative by setting goals, discovering their story, capturing ideas in a journal and learning about the “business” of art. This summer, those that participated will be sharing the results of the experience with 33 mini four-day exhibits and a group show.

In particular, Crabbe spent her 52-week creative exploration painting and writing daily. She realized that her “Lefty Series” had to be the focus of the exhibit.

Kathy Crabbe, who will be exhibiting her paintings from her Lefty Oracle Deck at the Riverside Art Museum in August, has been a professional artist since 1992.

“The Leftys are drawn with my non-dominant left hand, and they really changed me,” she said. “They helped me slow down and trust myself as I learned how to listen for the lines to lead me.”

Crabbe explained that she starts by drawing the head, and from there a character is born often with a totally made up name. She created a Lefty Oracle deck and started giving intuitive soul readings which have, according to the artist, touched many lives.

“Planning this exhibit has pushed me to finish telling each of the Leftys’ stories and to self-publish a 52-card Lefty Oracle deck along with a guidebook of journal prompts, affirmations and games that I will share during my exhibit,” she said.

Crabbe grew up in Canada and moved to Temecula in 2000 and has worked as a professional artist since 1992. Her art has been exhibited at the San Diego Women’s History Museum, Orange County Museum of Art and Sawdust Art Festival. She has also been published by “We’Moon Datebook” and has mentored and taught at Mt. San Jacinto College, Inspire San Diego Studio, Wise Woman University and HGTV. She is a founding member of the Temecula Artist’s Circle, Temecula Writer’s Cafe and Riverside Art Museum Printmaker’s Network.

Just installed my Lefty Oracle Deck originals at the Riverside Art Museum!

2016 First Bio Installment

Kathy: Writing bios is difficult because they feel so static and life is so fluid. I will be changing mine ALOT! Today is June 13, 2016 and I'm going to tell you about what's important for me right now and hopefully it will mean something to you too. I'm deeply immersed in shamanic studies via oral tradition with my mentor Francesca De Grandis. I'm devouring historical Celtic fantasy novels. I'm celebrating crone-dom after turning 50 last year and my, my, it's actually okay! I'm becoming more immersed in magic, and service and living my purpose. I'm still in love with my husband of 23 years. My pets are my dearest friends although my human friends are da best ever (with an Aquarius Moon in the 11th House, friends rule!) My sweet spot is when I'm at my cottage in Ontario, Canada on the water or better yet in a canoe on the water. I find that I'm enjoying writing more and even public speaking which is a small miracle in my mind.
