Embrace One-ness: A Spirit Guided Vision

Channeling Paloma of the Here and Now

Arms spread wide, black hair flowing out, I stand with my back against Paloma, her arms around me. I can feel her heart beating.

Black flames race out from her fingertips encircling us, encircling the whole world.

I stand. I wait. I feel Her power.

I repeat the words:

You are not your paintings.

You are not your work.

You are Divine.

You are Goddess.

Let go.

Let go.

Embrace the One-ness

Embrace the One-ness.

And I smile and feel my shoulders relax, a weight has lifted. I breathe in the morning.

I can do it. You can too. Whatever is making you miserable and bringing you down, know that you too will get though this.

Paloma lifts me up onto a stone ledge so that I am facing her. We are in a Cretan Cave of Red Bulls.* I place my hands upon red imprints of other hands on the cave walls feeling Herstory within me.

Like a jackal I howl; a thin, mournful sound that echoes back at me increasing in depth until it blends with my heartbeat.

Then we laugh, our teeth bared and shining...the Moon beckons and we go.

Vision Questing as Raven Persephone

Channeling Persephone: A Vision Quest Kathy Crabbe, Raven Persephone, 2013, mixed media on paper, 5 x 8”"Help me Persephone. I am exhausted with the business of selling."

And so Persephone becomes a Raven and we race through the Underworld, me on her back, until we come to an old woman wearing rags and feathers by the name of Gemma. She has very long fingers and a cloak which she wraps around me. I am listening, though I am weary and can barely stand. She taps me three times with a silver coin and I become one with the Divine and nothing else matters.

I am the Triple Goddess and I see a link with my art. "See something you like, make me an offer," but my rational mind says, "You have tried this and it didn't work," so I hop back on Raven Persephone and back we go through the Underworld; ancestors on all sides, and I'd like to stop and chat and I think, "these visions are stories that I could illustrate, but...I don't like to illustrate." And again my hopes are dashed.

On we go, faster and faster until all is a blur. I hold on tight. Then suddenly She is gone and I am floating, weightless, not really moving. And I feel nothing and my mind is blank. I hear my phone ring but I ignore it; it's the world calling again, but no one is home although I am getting hungry.

I can feel my hair growing and growing, down, down, down to the Earth and I have no fear. Nothing can reach me up here (or down there?) And I call out for Persephone yet again. But I am Persephone and Demeter is not here and I weep for my Mother who is so far away and she weeps for me. We are alone, each in our own worlds, but there is no time for weeping. There is work to do.

Entering the Light

Persephone AltarAnd again I face my Persephone Painting (the big one) and decide to create a smaller version before going any further (a linoblock print is next). And again I pull a Norse Rune to help me connect with Persephone, Goddess of the Underworld.

Channeling Persephone ~ A Ghostly Taleansuz - A God, Mouth

Persephone: "Meet me in the Circle" (there are ghosts everywhere), but we go deeper and deeper into the center, which is blood-red.

Persephone hands me a sphere also colored blood-red. "Drink, drink," she says and so I do and the sphere empties of colour and glows clear. "Now, you are one of us. You can see/hear/feel everything down here."

She puts a paintbrush in my hand and I'm back in the cave, as before, waiting to be guided to what I need to do. Persephone helps me stay focused on my purpose and not get distracted.

Me: (I realize this is how I like to work). A sunflower lights my way and I hold it with one hand and ask the dark spirits what to draw.

Dark Spirits: Go on.

Persephone: Your way is lit, your eyes shine through mine. March on, march on, march on.

Me: I see endless trails of white leading to souls; unhappy, trapped.

Persephone: Be with them, reassure them, show them the light - the source. Hold up your sphere. The sunflowers light your way.

And then, like a vacuum cleaner, or a moth to a flame, the soul's eyes open and they are sucked up and into the light by force of their will and their desire to be One with Source.

Me: What am I?

Persephone: You are the witness.

Painting Persephone

Why Persephone? Why now?

47 years ago I was adopted. When I was 27 I finally met my birth mother who I am now very close to. In the past year she has been fighting pancreatic cancer and so I feel a deep desire to dive deeply into the well with her by exploring the longest running mother/daughter myth there is; the Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone.

Sally, Kathy & friend - Solstice CelebrationSally, Me & Carol ~ Solstice Celebration

I'm interested in the pre-patriarchal version of the myth; the one where Persephone (the daughter) willingly ventures into the Underworld to help lost souls cross over to the Other Side. Her mother (Demeter) agrees to this, but in mourning Persephone, she turns summer into winter and the land becomes barren until Persephone returns in the Spring.

The myth re-enacts the cycle of birth/death/rebirth on a yearly basis; this is a natural part of life, but not one that our society accepts or understands in a conscious way. We are afraid of death and dying and what happens next. I do know that our souls do not die. Part of my work as a Creative Soul Guide is to venture into the Other World; the world below and to communicate with the Ancestors. To me, this is one of the most amazing and wondrous discoveries that I have every made.

I had taken a break from mediumship for a few years, but when my birth mom's battle heated up this past year I felt a strong pull to connect again with the departed; partly to reassure myself that yes, our souls do live on, and because I wanted to offer this service and this reassurance to others who are searching for contact from the beyond. I started re-connecting with my own ancestors each morning during meditation where they lovingly surround me. I have always known that we do not die; it's nothing provable or scientific, just a deep feeling of knowing-ness that is hard to explain.

So, when I ventured back into painting my large 4 x 4 foot acrylics on canvas, I knew things had to change, because I had changed. Persephone had entered my life and I was consciously channeling her every morning in conjunction with pulling a Rune. I started the painting in my usual abstract manner, but I had to stop; I was un-satisfied with the process and so I called upon Persephone for help.

It was time to paint in a way I'd never painted before...not from my own ego-self, but allowing Persephone to channel through me. At each step along the way I would stop, hold the Rune and consult with Her; not forcing things, but allowing Her guidance to come through and help me envision what I must do next.

Here are my notes from that session:

algiz - protection Persephone Rune Readings by Kathy CrabbeTo begin I pulled a Rune and called upon Persephone for help. I was told to envision myself in a cave painting on the walls. What would I paint? I would paint, not to serve myself, but Her and so I listened.

Then I painted white gesso over top of what I'd painted earlier, so that only a faint outline remained of a face and two circles.

Then, while holding the Rune I was guided to draw on the canvas with a big, thick piece of lead pencil WITHOUT LOOKING. When I opened my eyes I felt like filling in this shape with light ultramarine blue, but I didn't have enough so I painted it turquoise pearl instead.

And then Her face appeared and She was blood-red.

Next came the black, jagged tears, like wisps of dark ghosts underground (or spears).

Painting Persephone by Kathy Crabbe

This painting is for all the girls and women who are victims of sexual assault, just as Persephone was in the patriarchal version of Her myth. Victims such as 17 year old Rehtaeh Parsons who recently killed herself after being raped and videotaped by 4 young men in Nova Scotia and the 70 victims of sexual assault stemming from a phone prankster who pretended to be a police officer as depicted in the dark and disturbing 2012 movie, Compliance.

And I ask myself, "What can I do? What can we do, as a culture"?

It's time to be truthful. It's time to face Hard Truths about how the denigration of women and the Goddess directly relates to the rape and destruction of this planet. We need to ask ourselves, "How do I contribute to this madness and how can We stop it and stand up for Our Truth as women and Goddess?"
